Our own definition of a computer is a device capable of
computing. Computing is explained in a paper by A M Turing "On
computable numbers..." published in 1936. Computability was
demonstrated by what has come to be called a "Turing machine"
from the 1936 paper. Our readers will realise the importance of
1986, when this book was conceived despite its recent publication
(1994). The 2nd Edition contains corrections rather than
revisions. Turing was a mathematician interested in the working
of the brain. Much of the book is concerned with this
interaction and is written at a lay readable level. An important
book by many leading contributors.
