Stated to be "The Ultimate How-To Guide for Beginners - in Full Color" this book lives up to its claim, although we always have doubts about the word "ultimate", especially in the changing world of computers. We give full marks for the scope of the book, particularly for the design but also for the text and the illustrations. There is just so much usable knowledge that can be acquired about any software that it is essential to have a well-understood base in context on which to build. The extra handy bits that will enable the user to do just what he or she wants on their computer come later and slowly. This book is basic material. It starts with unpacking from the box and goes on to plugs and sockets. Gently, clearly it moves on to MS-DOS commands and not just the everyday commands; memory management and DEFRAG get a mention with lots of warnings. Start here; even if you no longer regard yourself as a beginner you will learn something - we did.
