Black-Box Testing is the author's preferred term for what is also known as "behavioural" or "functional" testing. It is the testing carried out by or on behalf of the prospective users of the software to check that the software does what the users want it to do. The author explains the principles and discusses the methods that may be used. There are obvious advantages in being systematic and guidance is useful to that end. To provide an example the author uses the US self-assessment tax forms and puts out a challenge to his and our readers round the world to give their countries' tax forms the same treatment. The author has an insight into testing that would improve the quality of software in use everywhere.
